Hawaii: The Blazing Maui fire in Hawaii are getting worse because of strong winds from a hurricane. This is making lots of people leave their homes and many can’t use electricity anymore. The fires are also burning down buildings in an old place called Lahaina Town. Some people are so scared of the fires that they’re going into the ocean to be safe.

During the night on Wednesday, the fires caused significant damage to businesses in the cherished Lahaina town and resulted in injuries to multiple individuals. The hurried evacuations led to congested roads.

US Coast Guard rescue people from ocean

A group of brave US Coast Guard rescuers managed to save twelve people from the ocean waters near Lahaina. These individuals had jumped into the water to find safety from the smoke and flames. Good news is that there haven’t been any reported deaths, but those who suffered burns were taken by air to Oahu. This information comes from a friendly spokesperson at the emergency services department in Honolulu.

A person named Mahina Martin, who speaks for the County of Maui, talked to USA TODAY on Wednesday. She said that the fires are causing problems in two parts of the island. One is called Lahaina, where people live and tourists visit. It also has stores in West Maui. The other place is Kula, where people live in the mountains. But the good news is that in Kihei, which is in South Maui, everything is safe. People can go back to their homes there. Kihei has different kinds of homes, condos, places where people go for short vacations, and things for visitors.

According to officials from Maui County, many buildings have been damaged and numerous evacuation orders are in effect as emergency teams work hard to control both brush and structural fires. Martin mentioned that they’re not yet sure about the number of people who have been evacuated, the extent of the fires, or the count of buildings that have been harmed.

Burned people taken to different islands.

Shayne Enright, a spokesperson from the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, mentioned that individuals with burns have been flown to Oahu. She didn’t know the exact number from Maui, but a woman in her 60s was taken to a Honolulu hospital in serious condition due to burns.

According to Luke, Maui’s hospitals are really busy with burn patients and people hurt by smoke. Moving them to other hospitals has been hard.

“We’re talking to other hospitals to help out because Maui’s hospital can’t treat severe burns. We need to fly patients out for proper care,” Luke explained. “Besides the disaster, we’re also facing big transport problems.”

Hawaii Officials To Hold News Conference

Hawaii’s leaders will talk about the wildfires and how Dora has affected things in a meeting at 10 a.m. Hawaii time (4 p.m. Eastern Time) on Wednesday.

Luke, who is acting as governor while Green is away, will talk, and the mayors of Hawaii County and Maui County will also speak.

People watch as smoke and flames fill the air from raging wildfires on Front Street in downtown Lahaina, Maui on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2023. Maui officials say a wildfire in the historic town has burned parts of one of the most popular tourist areas in Hawaii. County of Maui spokesperson Mahina Martin said in a phone interview early Wednesday says the fire was widespread in Lahaina, including Front Street, an area of the town popular with tourists.

On Wednesday, Luke who is as acting governor made an important announcement. They declared a state of emergency for all counties and advised against unnecessary flying to Maui.

The reason for this decision is the ongoing wildfires in Hawaii, which are being made worse by the strong winds from Hurricane Dora.

Luke expressed how this situation is really bad and unusual, caused indirectly by Hurricane Dora passing near our islands. They feel sorry for the people in Maui and all who are affected.

This advice not to travel is given so that the state can focus its limited resources on helping the people in Maui who are in urgent need.

According to this announcement, if you’re visiting West Maui, it’s suggested that you leave the island as soon and as safely as you can.

This news comes after an emergency announcement on Tuesday, where they called in the National Guard and allowed money from the state’s funds to be used for helping in this difficult situation.

Around 2,000 people are trapped at Maui airport.

According to Martin, there are more than 2,000 visitors at Maui’s Kahului Airport. Some had to cancel flights, while others had no place to go. On Wednesday, the Hawaii Department of Transportation shared that around 1,800 people stayed overnight at the airport. Unfortunately, many roads on the island’s west side are still closed.

The HDOT, which stands for Hawaii Department of Transportation, has been really helpful. They worked together with airlines and TSA to make sure passengers are safe. This is because wildfires are still burning in Lahaina and upcountry. They shared this information on a platform called X, which used to be known as Twitter.

It’s good to know that there are nearly 100 firefighters working hard. Among them are 11 from the state airport rescue team, according to county officials.

Hawaiian Airlines gives money back because of the wildfires.

Hawaiian Airlines posted a message on Twitter this Wednesday morning. They said that if you have a flight booked and the wildfires are causing problems, you can either get your money back or pick a different date to travel. This is because of the emergency situation in Maui County and the advice not to travel unless it’s really necessary.

They explained that they have a special plan in action, so you won’t have to pay extra if you decide to change your plans or cancel your trip.

What Reason drive maui Wildfires

The bad wildfires in Hawaii are happening because the wind is strong and everything is really dry. Even though experts don’t know everything about how the climate problem will change Hawaii, they do know that as the world gets hotter, there will be even less water and more drought.

What Scientist Says About Wildfires

Scientists say that people are making the weather more extreme by using too much fossil fuel, which causes climate change. They’ve been telling the government to cut down on emissions a lot to stop big climate problems from happening.
